Hurricane Preparedness
As a member of the Plymouth Rock family, you've chosen the highest level of protection and care. Have you taken the same proactive approach to protecting yourself and your loved ones from a hurricane?
Over the last decade, New Jersey has felt the effects of nearly 20 hurricanes and tropical storms. We've provided the following basic guidelines and tips to help you be prepared for the next time a storm heads our way.
Build Your Emergency Kit
At a minimum, collect the following supplies and pack a portable bag or case:
- Water: at least one gallon per person, per day
- Food: non-perishable items (be sure to pack a can opener if needed)
- Medication: seven-day supply (along with medical items)
- Toiletries: sanitation and personal hygiene items
- Communication: cell phones with chargers and a battery-powered or handcrank radio (NOAA Weather Radio if possible) with extra batteries
- Utilities: a flashlight, multipurpose tool and whistle
- Personal Documents: copies of important medical information, insurance policies, birth certificates, passports, proof of address, deed/lease to your home, and emergency contact information
- Money: extra cash and a credit card
- Bedding: one sleeping bag or blanket per person
- Pet Supplies: food and extra water for any furry family members
Also prepare your car, whether or not you will be able to use it. Make sure your gas tank is filled in the event you need to evacuate. If floods are expected, make sure your car is placed in the garage or away from potential flood waters.
Make a Plan
Determine how your family will communicate and reconnect.
- Choose a building or park to meet at outside of your neighborhood, and make sure everyone is clear on the location
- Post emergency numbers (fire, police, ambulance) by the phone
- Ensure children know to call 911 for help
- Ask an out-of-state relative or family friend to serve as a common contact
